If you love classic cocktails with a slightly mischievous twist, the Black Corpse Reviver #2 is about to earn a permanent spot in your rotation. This inky, dramatic drink takes the elegant Corpse Reviver No. 2 and gives it a dark makeover using activated charcoal. It’s equal parts spooky and sophisticated, perfect for Halloween or my Black Magic–themed party.
Despite the bold appearance, this cocktail stays beautifully balanced, bright, and citrus-forward.

A Dark Twist on a Classic Cocktail
The OG Corpse Reviver No. 2 is a balanced mix of gin, Cointreau, Lillet Blanc, fresh lemon juice, and a whisper of absinthe. The Black Corpse Reviver follows the same classic proportions, but with a touch of activated charcoal added purely for visual drama.
The result is a jet-black cocktail that keeps all the crisp, refreshing qualities of the original, just with a lot more attitude. It oozes spooky.
What’s Activated Charcoal?
The activated charcoal is used here strictly for aesthetics. It’s flavorless, but incredibly effective at transforming a cocktail’s appearance with just a small amount. That deep black color instantly signals “something special,” making it a standout on any party table.
Because charcoal is highly absorbent, it’s best enjoyed occasionally and in small amounts. Think of it as a fun, visual garnish rather than a functional ingredient. Shake well to fully incorporate the powder into your cocktails.
Which Gin?
For the Black Corpse Reviver, I love using Empress 1908 gin. Its subtle floral profile pairs beautifully with citrus-heavy cocktails, and its natural indigo hue (from butterfly pea blossom) plays especially well with the charcoal, adding depth to the black color.
More importantly, Empress balances the lemon and Cointreau without overpowering them, keeping the drink crisp, clean, and refreshing.
