If you’re looking for an excuse to break out your tiki glasses and flamingo floats, a luau-themed pool party is the way to go. I recently hosted one and it turned out to be the best summer bash—complete with colorful décor, tropical drinks, and more pineapples than I care to admit buying. Here’s how I brought the island vibes home, plus some ideas to recreate it.

Luau Colors
There are three key elements to any successful Luau Pool Party: sunshine, water, and floral drinks. With that in mind I built out this summery color pallet and got to work planning décor and a menu.
The Decor: Go Big or Go Beachy
Decorating for a luau is half the fun. I used palm leaf cutouts, inflatable flamingos, and layered florals everywhere. A tropical tablecloth with pineapples set the tone, and I topped it with a flamingo float centerpiece.

Food Menu
The food was casual but fun. Chips and pineapple salsa served in a carved-out pineapple doubled as decor! You can make a fresh pineapple salsa with red onion, tomato, cilantro, lime, and jalapeño for a little heat. Other easy luau snacks: potato salad, pulled pork sliders, and a fruit platter.

Drink Menu
No luau is complete without tropical drinks. I set up a self-serve drink station with rum punch, Mai Tais, and pineapple-forward Painkiller cocktails. Fresh citrus slices, drink umbrellas, and plenty of ice kept things feeling extra. Batching the cocktails ahead of time made hosting easy and let guests help themselves—which means more drinking and less bartending.

This luau pool party was bright, breezy, and ridiculously fun. It’s the kind of event that feels effortless but looks pulled together with just a few thoughtful touches. Add some sunshine and a great playlist, and you’ve got the recipe for a perfect summer gathering.

- Dress Code: I asked guests to wear tropical prints or leis (which I handed out at the door).
- Playlist: Think reggae, steel drums, and surf pop—anything that feels like sunshine.
