Painkiller cocktail styled for a tropical setting with citrus and pineapple accents.

Painkiller

If you’re craving a tropical escape in a glass, the Painkiller is your ticket to the islands. Creamy, citrusy, and dangerously easy to drink, this classic cocktail was originally created in the British Virgin Islands in the 1970s—and it still delivers full vacation energy decades later. No passport required.

Choosing Dark Rum

Traditionally, a Painkiller is made with Pusser’s Rum, a navy-style dark rum known for its bold, rich flavor and a bit of molasses funk. But you can absolutely experiment with other dark or aged rums.

  • Plantation Original Dark – smooth and versatile, with hints of banana and vanilla.
  • Appleton Estate Signature – a great Jamaican option that adds tropical funk.
  • Ron Diplomatico – rich and slightly sweet, great if you like a smoother finish.

Garnishing a Painkiller

I garnish my Painkiller with a pineapple leaf and a slice of orange, which adds height and color without overwhelming the glass. A pineapple wedge is another classic option, especially if you’re serving with crushed ice. For something a little extra, you could add an umbrella or other cocktail décor. Just keep it playful and vibrant—this is a vacation-in-a-glass kind of drink, after all.
